Some people are born Italian. Others become Italian through a passion for Italy's food, music, art, history or way of living. Unlike these Italianophiles, I chose to inhabit the language, as bawdy as it is beautiful, as intriguing and elusive as Mona Lisa's smile.
For more than two decades I have studied Italian every way I could findclasses, conversation groups, CDs, podcasts, flashcards, filmsin Italy and in the United States. In the process I acquired much more than a second language. I learned a new way of seeing, hearing, speaking and being in the world. Word by word, I found myself becoming Italian.
This blog, Becoming Italian Word by Word, features terms and expressions that opened a window for me into Italian life and culture. I do not claim to be a scholar or linguist, and I apologize for any strafalcioni (gross blunders). Click below to join in, and please feel free to set me straight and to share your thoughts, comments and experiencesin English or Italian.
